I became a massage therapist in 2014. My journey to bodywork began while serving in the United States Army as a medic. While working in a Western medicine epicenter of a level 1 trauma center, I was quickly jaded to the ideas of the quick fix that most Western medicine tends to focus on. Deciding to still stay in the medical field, I became an Occupational Therapy Assistant in 2012 and began to study manual treatment techniques.
I became certified in Active Release Technique(ART) for the Upper body and Graston Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation at that time. I experienced the wonders of manual techniques and their holistic approach to injury/pain treatment. Exiting the service in 2013, I quickly started massage school where I learned the basic Swedish massage techniques, while at the same time getting as much information on Deep Myofascial Techniques of which ART was somewhat based on.
Starting with Anatomy Trains (a great book by Thomas Myers), I began my journey with Structural Integration (SI) techniques, learning a variety of modalities from many different schools of Structural Integration. In May 2013, I became certified as a Structural Integrator from the Soma Institute of Neuromuscular Integration.
In 2019, I graduated from the Oregon College Of Oriental Medicine with a Masters in Chinese Medicine. As such, I have now added Acupuncture and Moxibustion to my available modalities. I use a Japanese Style of Acupuncture, which generally uses more superficial needling and moxibustion to treat after careful examination of the hara (abdomen) and the pulse.
My Acupuncture and Moxibustion combo or AcuMoxa is used mainly to treat the internal system of the body, which can include addressing digestive complaints, states of emotion, bolstering immunity, and decreasing the Autonomic nervous system response to pain.
In 2020, I have added the Functional Range System(FRS) to my practice, broken down into 4 treatment categories starting with the Functional Range Assessment (FRA), the client's body is thoroughly assessed from a physical structure standpoint to see current status of all the major joints of the body and assessment of joint availability and functional mobility. The client is then taken through Functional Range Release (FR) where pinpointed assessment gets to the root of structural issues that may be causing pain and decreasing performance. This is done through the use of manual bodywork internal inputs along with external inputs via Functional Range Conditioning (FRC). These are specific exercises used to continue to give tissue inputs when not in clinic to increase resilience in tissue and functional mobility.
The 4th rung of the FRS is Kinstretch, a group oriented class taking clients through joint strengthening focused classes that may be similar to yoga or pilates in that it aims to continue to increase full body control and functional mobility in a general way for overall health. My work at the moment revolves around using all of these various modalities in a new way of looking at Sports Medicine. Using AcuMoxa, FRS and Structural Integration together helps to build total body health, full body control, and functional mobility in an effort to help clients train for being more human.
Today I live in Vancouver, WA/Portland, OR area with my beautiful wife, Stefanie and 5 kids Reverie, Milo and Maggie, Luna and Phoebe I hope that we can work together and that I can impact you with specialized mobility training, bodywork, and acumoxa the same way it has had an impact on me physically, as well as mentally and emotionally.
