What is Visionary Craniosacral Work?
Visionary Craniosacral Work is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that helps to balance the nervous system and unwind tension and trauma in the brain, cranial bones, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, and central nervous system. By making use of gentle holds at bony junctures and energy centers of the body, craniosacral encourages the recipient to drop in to a state of deep relaxation. This state of relaxation is the foundation upon which the healing and restorative properties of the work take form. The recipient may experience and fluctuate between periods of deep stillness and subtle, wavelike, unwinding movements in the head, neck, and spine. Unlike other massage modalities in which the therapist is doing something to facilitate a desired outcome in the client’s body, in craniosacral work, we trust the intelligence of the body itself to know what it needs and know how to heal itself. The therapist’s job is to listen for this knowing and follow it.
Craniosacral Work has had profound benefit for people who suffer from chronic headaches, TMJ and other jaw related issues, post-operative dental trauma, whiplash, tinnitus and PTSD. It can be particularly helpful for people who are looking to slow down and regulate the nervous system during times of stress, grief, recovery and transition. Craniosacral work is typically performed over clothing on a massage table. Due to its gentle nature, the work is suitable for people of all ages and conditions, including children and even infants.
What makes Craniosacral Work visionary?
Visionary Craniosacral Work® (VCSW) was pioneered by Hugh Milne, a third-generation Scottish osteopath, with whom I studied from 2012-2017. VCSW combines an in-depth understanding of cranial structures and anatomy with an intuitive approach that draws perception from the therapist’s inner eye, inner ear, and heart. Techniques are drawn from three principal traditions: osteopathy, energy work, and Taoism. By bringing these traditions together, we hold space not just for what we can see, but also for what we can sense.
I aim to access a depth of vision of what’s truly ailing someone, as well as support the unfolding and expression of what’s truly possible for their healing.
